Care For Used barrels

Before filling:

Always test for leaks and seepage by pouring about 3 gallons of COLD water into the barrel and setting it on the head for 12 to 24 hours – using the same water, turn the barrel over and let it rest on the other head for 12 to 24 hours or until no seepage is visible.

For faster results use hot water (which may remove some of the flavor from the barrel).

Spraying the outside or letting the barrel sit in the rain with help swell the wood as well, if the barrels has dried out during shipping or storage.

Used wine barrels need to be sulfured once a month if not in use. (Sulphur discs which are burned inside the barrels can be purchased from a winery supply store).

DO NOT sulfur spirits barrels!

If an old barrel has ‘turned’ (VA – Brett – Rancid smelling etc.) rinse the barrel with a mixture of 3 gallons of cold water and about 3 oz. (12 tablespoons) of citric acid. Shake the mixture around and empty. No rinsing needed.

If this does not solve the problem, fill the barrel with the water / citric acid mixture and leave for a day. (4 tablespoons citric acid per 1 gallon of water). If citric acid is not available, salt may be used instead. Use the same ratio as with the citric acid and make sure to RINSE the barrel after the treatment.

If none of these methods fix the problem, Call 707-257-0714 or click here
